چکیده

Aim: To investigate the number of molar cusps of the Southern Chinese and compare these with studies in different populations. Materials and Methods: The number of molar cusps of study casts of an unselected sample from a 12 year old Hong Kong Oral Health Survey of 12 year old children (n=459; 295 boys and 164 girls) were studied. Results: For upper first molars, 5-cusp molars were the most prevalent in males (39%) while 4-cusp molars were the most prevalent in females (39%). For lower first molars, 5-cusp molars were the most prevalent in both sexes (63%-72%). For lower second molars, 5-cusp molars were the most prevalent in both sexes (43%-53%). Conclusion: Different from traditionally described, the Southern Chinese has more 5-cusp lower second molars than the 4cusp ones.

Variation in modern human enamel formation times.

Most of what we know about the timing of human enamel formation comes from radiographic studies on children of known age. Here, we present new longitudinal data derived from a histological analysis of tooth enamel. Two samples, one from southern Africa and one from northern Europe, contained all anterior and molar tooth types. Two further samples contained only one tooth type: canines from a me...

Induction of radioresistant nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line CNE-2R by repeated high-dose X-ray irradiation

Background: All To enhance the curative effect of radiotherapy, we established a radio-resistant cell line, CNE-2R from CNE-2, a radio-sensitive type of CNE, through repeated irradiation. The developed cell line provides a basis for further studies on the radio-resistance of CNE and the molecular mechanism of radiotherapy sensitization drugs. Materials and Methods: The CNE-2 cell line was selec...

Brief communication: dental development and enamel thickness in the Lakonis Neanderthal molar.

Developmental and structural affinities between modern human and Neanderthal dental remains continue to be a subject of debate as well as their utility for informing assessments of life history and taxonomy. Excavation of the Middle Paleolithic cave site Lakonis in southern Greece has yielded a lower third molar (LKH 1). Here, we detail the crown development and enamel thickness of the distal c...

Evolutionary modification of development in mammalian teeth: quantifying gene expression patterns and topography.

The study of mammalian evolution often relies on detailed analysis of dental morphology. For molecular patterning to play a role in dental evolution, gene expression differences should be linkable to corresponding morphological differences. Because teeth, like many other structures, are complex and evolution of new shapes usually involves subtle changes, we have developed topographic methods by...

Genetic structure of a tribal population, the Yanomama Indians. XIII. Dental microdifferentiation.

Data are presented on the frequency of the following eight dental traits in 635 Yanomama and 65 Makiritare Indians: upper central incisor rotation or winging, shoveling of maxillary incisors, maxillary molar hypocone reduction, Carabelli's trait, mandibular molar cusp number, mandibular molar cusp pattern rotation of second lower premolar, and pattern of second lower premolar cusps. Yanomama de...
